![]() It starts in the middle of the outbreak, with the first half consisting solely of getting Gabe to the "twist" before chapter two. I know Dead Space 2's story isn't a masterpiece of modern game making, but it flowed well, it explained what it needed to and showed you some amazing stuff along the way. I'm not saying I expect incredible new things from a piece of $7 DLC, but there is nothing new or interesting in it apart from a 30-odd-second sequence near the end that is neither fun to play or anywhere near as visually stunning as the end of the core game. Everything about the gameplay is directly out of the main game. There only two new items in the Security Suit (which apart from looking cool offers no unique benefits) and the Patrol Seeker Rifle, which behaves exactly like the default Seeker Rifle. There are two new areas, at the very beginning and very end, both of which consist of roughly 2 rooms, plus the multiplayer map Titan Mines. I bought Severed the second I got home, and played through the entire thing in one sitting. I easily put it in my top few games of all time from a solely fun point of view. ![]() They're both bigger, ambitious titles that are trying to gun for that mass audience CoD demographic by changing their core formulas substantially.I loved Dead Space 2. RE5 and RE6 have human enemies with guns (RE5 only at the end), RE6 adds a semi-cover system. Resident Evil 6 was roughly contemporaneous with Dead Space 3 and both were disasters - although RE6 actually sold fairly strongly it was just brutalized by critics and audience scores. Resident Evil 5 proved you could do it and have a smash hit on your hands. The idea of a coop horror action game wasn't implicitly wrong. And then they tried to go bigger again with Dead Space 3 and they screwed the pooch. and they sold more copies but it was on a higher budget so they weren't really in a good place still. ![]() ![]() And so they went bigger with Dead Space 2. Their basic choice was - go big or go home. They wanted big hits, not games that made small amounts of money off large investments. The series was in a death spiral from the beginning, because it was such an expensive studio location and the profits were never quite enough to be sustainable overall from EA's perspective. The ship graveyard is legitimately cool and the ice planet is a good setting too. ![]()
